Every single summer, the media rolls out the exact same panic script. Twenty thousand people flee. Homes turn to ash. Smoke chokes the horizon. News outlets point the finger at climate change, write sob stories about displaced families, and demand more funding for water bombers.
It is a comforting narrative. It is also entirely wrong.
The lazy consensus is that every fire is an emergency requiring immediate, aggressive suppression. I have spent years analyzing ecological policy and disaster management, and I am telling you that our obsession with putting out every single blaze is the exact reason British Columbia burns worse with each passing year. We are not fighting nature. We are subsidizing a catastrophic disaster.
The Suppression Trap
Fire is as native to the interior of British Columbia as pine trees and granite. For millennia, low-intensity fires rolled through these forests naturally every few decades. They cleared out the underbrush, recycled nutrients back into the soil, and created a patchy mosaic of old and young trees that stopped massive crown fires from forming.
Then humans showed up with Smokey Bear complexes.
We adopted a total suppression policy. If a spark hit the brush, we sent helicopters, crews, and retardant. We patted ourselves on the back for saving the trees.
What we actually did was create a massive, highly flammable powder keg.
Every fire we prevent today guarantees a larger, more ferocious fire tomorrow. Dead wood piles up. Fuel loads skyrocket. Underbrush transforms into a dense, continuous ladder of tinder that invites flames straight up into the forest canopy. When a fire finally breaks out under dry, windy conditions—and it always does—it does not gently clear the forest floor. It creates a thermonuclear firestorm that incinerates everything, including the soil biology.
The Human Error of Expansion
Let us talk about the twenty thousand people forced to flee. This is treated purely as a tragedy of weather, but it is actually a failure of real estate and municipal planning.
We keep building sprawling subdivisions, luxury cabins, and industrial outposts deeper into the wildland-urban interface. We treat the forest like a scenic backdrop for suburban comfort rather than a dynamic, volatile ecosystem. Then, when the ecosystem does what it has done for millions of years, we act surprised.
Imagine a scenario where coastal cities built million-dollar homes directly on active shifting sand dunes or right at the edge of an eroding sea cliff, and then screamed at the ocean for taking back the land. That is what British Columbia is doing with its interior forests.
We subsidize the rebuilding of homes in high-risk zones through disaster relief funds, removing all economic friction from bad decisions. If you build a wood-frame house in the middle of a dense, unmanaged pine forest without defensible space, you have not just bought a home; you have bought an unmitigated liability.
The Data We Refuse to Look At
The numbers are clear, yet policy stubbornly ignores them. Fire suppression agencies point to rising suppression budgets as proof of their commitment, while ignoring the return on investment. Pumping billions of dollars into water bombers and retardant drops over remote, low-value timberland is an exercise in financial arson.
Studies in forestry management consistently show that historical fire intervals were much shorter and fire sizes much smaller precisely because low-severity fires burned regularly. When we suppress 98% of fires in their infancy, the remaining 2% become uncontainable monsters.
The downside of my approach is stark, and I will not sugarcoat it. Letting fires burn means heavy smoke in tourist towns. It means temporary evacuations. It means accepting that some timber and some structures will be lost today to prevent the total obliteration of entire regions tomorrow.
Controlled burns and managed wildland fires are messy. They are politically toxic. No elected official wants to explain to voters why their valley is filled with smoke on a sunny August afternoon for the sake of long-term ecological health.
What Actually Needs to Happen
Stop treating smoke as a policy failure. Smoke is the price of admission for living near a fire-adapted ecosystem.
First, slash the budget for knee-jerk interior fire suppression on remote public lands and redirect those funds toward prescribed burns during shoulder seasons. Second, overhaul zoning laws. If a municipality wants to approve housing developments in high-risk forest zones, force them to mandate non-combustible building materials, metal roofs, and mandatory 100-meter clearing perimeters. Stop using taxpayer money to bail out bad zoning choices.
Until we stop treating every spark as an existential threat, British Columbia will continue to run the same tragic, expensive script every single year. The forest wants to burn. The only question is whether we let it burn on our terms or on its terms.
